Juan José joined the firm in 2017 and has been a partner since 2022.

He is an expert in tax, administrative, and constitutional litigation, as well as tax consulting, advising multinational companies in the energy, real estate, private equity, banking, and financial sectors. He represents clients in dispute proceedings before tax and administrative authorities, regulators and the Taxpayer Defense Attorney’s Office, aimed at minimizing or eliminating contingencies from audits and other administrative inspections. Juan José also has extensive experience in audits related to cross-border transactions, managing complex international tax matters and double taxation treaty applications.

Juan José gained international experience as a foreign associate at Ernst & Young in New York and Houston. He is an active member of the International Fiscal Association (IFA) and the Mexican Bar Association.

Relevant Experience

  • Participated in obtaining a favorable decision on behalf of one of the major international banks regarding different administrative fines imposed by the Banking and Securities Commission.
  • Represented real estate multinationals against different tax assessments concerning deficiencies observed in connection to withholding taxes applicable to interest payments made to foreign residents.
  • Represented one of the major international banks in different contentious procedures against assessments issued by tax authorities regarding the taxation of financial derivative transactions.
  • Represented major oil and gas companies in contentious procedures to obtain relevant value added tax refunds. His assistance in the process pioneered the issuance of specific regulations for this type of refunds in preoperative periods.
  • Represented one of the most important renewable energy project companies in Mexico, subsidiary of one of the world’s largest private equity firms, in an amparo lawsuit against an assessment made by local tax authorities requiring payment of certain duties to operate a wind farm.
  • Assisted a major oil and gas services company in a contentious procedure related to a potential tax deficiency derived from the obligation to withhold income tax upon cross-border intercompany payments made as a consequence of certain oilfield services rendered in Mexico.
  • Represented major oil and gas upstream companies in amparo litigations against a legal provision that requires contractors to pay an exploration and an extraction tax, in violation of different constitutional principles.
  • Has led negotiations with tax authorities on regulations in connection to the tax treatment of cryptocurrency buy/sell operations settled though cryptocurrency exchanges, as well as over the counter transactions.
